Heroes can be left as single characters or combined with an infantry unit. Most of not all these units offer upgrades as well. Vehicle units include two walker variants, two transport variants, an artillery unit, a landspeeder, and the OP Predator Tank. In some scenarios you can build improved "terminator" variants of the space marine units by controlling Relic positions. Infantry unit choices included a cloakable scout, the basic space marine which can be upgraded to use one of four heavy weapons, a jet pack marine. This forces you to push out of your base early to start boosting your resource production. The other is largely gathered by building plasma generators, although if you find a slag deposit on the map you can build on it for effectively 4x plasma generators. One you obtain by holding strategic points and building/upgrading listening posts on them. You have a stronghold, infantry barracks, tech building, vehicle barracks, 2 defensive buildings, 2 resource buildings, and a building to train a support unit as well as tech for heroes. The story begins with an elite regiment of Space Marines arriving on Planet Tartarus to repel an Ork invasion and defend the citizens of the Imperium. So much so that after I completed the final mission, I immediately ordered the Dawn of War Omnibus (3 novels in 1) to get more of the story.

I REALLY enjoyed Dawn of War's 11 mission campaign. I'm an inconsistent gamer and mostly enjoy the nostalgia that I get from the genre and older games from when I did play regularly. I never played Dawn of War when it first came out and stumbled across it on this subreddit about a year ago.
